Duda will meet his German counterpart Joachim Gauck in the afternoon, and later Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The main topics of discussion will be the Eastern policy, next year's NATO summit in Warsaw, as well as the problem of immigration into the EU.

“We will talk about how to effectively lead to lasting peace in Ukraine,” President Duda said on Wednesday, announcing that he also wants to talk about security guarantees for Poland within NATO.

“I will discuss continuing the NATO operations, which were started in Newport [in 2014 – ed.], but would lead to a permanent extension of NATO presence in our region,” the Polish head of state told the TVP broadcaster.

President Duda has also said that he would like to discuss the merits of the Normandy format of talks about the Ukraine crisis.

Duda has hinted that the format, which involves Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany, might not be conducive to end the crisis in Ukraine. He called for other members to be added to the talks.

Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz has appealed to President Andrzej Duda to convene a sitting of the National Security Council (RBN) to decide on Poland’s stance in relation to events in Ukraine. (rg/rk)
