In an interview with Portuguese Radio the pope spoke about his native Argentina, which – he said – had accepted immigrants, including from Poland.

In another interview, for Catholic Radio Renascenca, Francis said Cardinal Angelo Comastri and papal almoner, Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, had welcomed two families of migrants into the Vatican after his appeal on 6 September for all parishes and monasteries in Europe to do the same.

Cardinal Comastri said then that the Vatican had invited the family will be provided with medical care and receive all necessary assistance.

Francis recalled the history of Argentina, which he said had since the nineteenth century seen waves of refugees accepted from various European countries, including Italy, Portugal and Poland. (jh)
