Seven people, including the captain, were aboard the Polish tugboat Zeus when the fire began.

“We are shaken and shocked by what has happened,” commented Stefan Oskarsson, agent of the vessel's owner, in a statement released on Thursday.

The fire apparently started below deck, and it is understood that several crew-members attempted to put it out.

The bodies of the four victims were all found below deck.

The three crew-members who managed to escape were all taken to hospital.

An investigation is expected to begin as soon as it is considered safe to board the tugboat. Swedish police have confirmed plans to interview the captain and surviving crew-members when they are fit to be questioned. (nh/rk)
