The pontiff, who has just returned to the Vatican after a five-day tour of the United States, noted that the Kraków event, which lasts from 26 July to 31 July, forms part of the Holy Year of Mercy.

We have come to the last stretch of our pilgrimage to Kraków, the place where we will celebrate the 31st World Youth Day next year in the month of July,” Pope Francis said.

During the year ahead, let us allow ourselves to be inspired by the words: 'Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.'”

The pontiff also emphasized the Polish city's connections with Saint John Paul II, Poland's first pope, who had served as Archbishop of Kraków, and Saint Faustyna Kowalska, the two great apostles of mercy of our times.”

The pope affirmed that Kraków, the city of Saint John Paul II and Saint Faustyna Kowalska, is waiting for us with open arms and hearts.”

It is expected that up to 2.5 million young people will attend the event, together with 20,000 priests and 1,200 bishops.

Organizers, led by Auxiliary Bishop Damian Muskus of Krakow, hope to gather 20,000 volunteers from Poland and abroad to help with the event. (nh/rk)
