Ship with 5 Polish crew still missing after Hurricane Joaquin

A container ship with 33 crew, including five Poles, remains missing after Hurricane Joaquin battered the Bahamas.

No contact has been had with El Faro since Thursday, and although the U.S. Coast Guard sent out a cutter ship, a rescue helicopter and an airplane on Friday, no trace of the vessel has been found to date

The search is due to be renewed on Saturday afternoon.

The ship was headed for San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Jacksonville, Florida.

On Thursday morning, the Coast Guard received a notification that the ship had been hit by the hurricane near Crooked Island in the Bahamas, and that it had lost propulsion.

It is understood that crew communicated that water had come onboard, but that it had been contained. However, no further communication was made following the notification. (nh/rk)
