The search for the container ship El Faro has been on since Thursday after a notification was received that the vessel was in distress.

No communication has been made with the ship since the initial signal.

To date, the US Coast Guard has searched over 30,000 square miles, using a cutter ship, a rescue helicopter and an airplane.

The life ring was found 120 nautical miles northeast of Crooked Island, in the Bahamas.

The US Coast Guard has released a statement noting that the finding of the life ring “validates our search efforts and while we are disappointed we did not find the ship today we are hopeful.

The ship was headed for San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Jacksonville, Florida.

Meanwhile, family members of the missing crew have asking why the vessel was permitted to set sail in such treacherous conditions. (nh/rk)
