Dr Tomasz Fryzlewicz, a heart specialist, had been practising in the UK since 2006, and he had already been sacked by two hospitals.

Until last year, doctors from within the European Union had been exempt from having to take language tests.

However, after the rules were changed, 56-year-old Dr Fryzlewicz underwent tests over several months that checked his speaking, listening, as well as reading and writing skills.

He failed the tests and the General Medical Council (GMC) resolved to strike him off, making Fryzlewicz the first EU doctor to be banned under the new language regulations.

Chairman of the GMC panel Dr Harvey Marcovitch noted that “although there has been no evidence of actual harm to patients, the Panel noted the additional supervision, assistance and time which have been required to ensure that you worked safely.” (nh/rk)
