Just like other EU countries, Poland will have to stick to its pledge to accept refugees, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, said.

Juncker reiterated that he does not agree with those who use the argument of the influx of terrorists in debates about accepting asylum seekers.

During a “civic dialogue” held in Brussels, Juncker said that he had heard that certain Polish politicians “even before they were ministers” of the new government, had signalled the possibility of abandoning the decision on accepting refugees, which had been agreed upon by their predecessors.

“We have to wait until the new government begins work, and we will discuss this issue,” Juncker said.

“Poland, like other member states, is obliged to execute the decisions that were taken by the Council of the EU,” he added.

Local authorities in the Polish capital Warsaw, which had been gearing up to take in some 500 refugees in the city, are now awaiting a top-level go-ahead, after newly elected Minister for European Affairs resolved to reconsider Poland's pledge to take in asylum seekers.

In September, the EU, including the then-government of Poland, agreed to take on some 7,000 people as part of a bloc-wide plan to resettle 160,000 refugees who came to Italy and Greece. (rg/di)
