The European Commission has earmarked a sum of EUR 3 billion to set up a Refugee Facility for Turkey, a coordinated mechanism designed to ensure the needs of refugees are met.

“Within this framework, the setting up of a Turkey Refugee Facility translates our intentions into concrete actions,” Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans said in a press release on Tuesday.

Unknown sources claim that funding the Refugee Facility would be similar to the method used to determine payments to the EU budget, a percentage of GDP.

Poland is to provide 2.85 percent of its GDP, amounting to over EUR 71 million.

The EU budget will provide EUR 500 million to the fund, leaving EUR 2.5 billion to be delivered by the member states.

“This money is about providing support to further improve daily lives and socio-economic conditions of Syrians seeking refuge in Turkey,” EC Vice-President Timmermans claimed in the press release.

Due to its geographical location, Turkey is a major transit country for refugees and migrants from the Middle East and has spent over EUR 7 billion on humanitarian aid and support for those seeking asylum. (ua/aba/rk)
