NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Foreign Minister of Poland Witold Waszczykowski have together unveiled a 2016 NATO Warsaw summit logo, based on Warsaw’s legendary mermaid.

“Legend tells us that after being rescued by local fishermen, the mermaid, armed with a sword and a shield, stood ready to protect the city and its people,” Secretary General Stoltenberg explained.

The logo was unveiled on Tuesday evening, during a two day meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

The Secretary General added that the style of the logo, based on the Polish Poster School, reflects modern Poland as “forward looking, energetic and warm.”

“The summit in Warsaw is a unique event for Poland. It will be held in a place which gave its name to a Cold War military alliance in 1955, which for almost four decades was the main opponent of NATO,” Waszczykowski commented during the unveiling.

The Polish minister also noted that this is the first time since 2008 that a NATO summit has been held in one of the eastern flank countries.

The 2016 NATO summit will take place in Warsaw on the 8th and 9th of July. It is expected that some 2,500 delegates, including heads of state, foreign ministers and defence ministers will attend.

NATO summits are organised to allow heads of state of member countries to decide on the Alliance’s strategy. The last such summit was held in Newport, Wales, in 2014. (sl/nh/rk)
