It was a constructive conversation about the new Polish government and cooperation with the European Parliament,” Schulz told reporters during a break between talks at the two-day EU summit in the Belgian capital.

We assured each other that, based on full mutual respect, we will try to work constructively,” he added.

On Monday, Schulz had said in an interview with a German radio station that recent moves by Poland's new government had the characteristics of coup d'état.”

His remarks referred to the ongoing row about appointments to Poland's Constitutional Court.

Szydło stressed on Monday that she was expecting Schulz to apologise for his unacceptable" comments.

Poland's constitutional crisis is due to be discussed at the European Parliament on 19 January.

However, it is understood that the subject was not broached by Schulz and Szydło in Brussels.

The emphasis was laid on the notion that it was a meeting of two people who should perhaps speak more often with each other, so as to avoid to avoid such exchanges of opinion which, it seems, do not serve anyone ,” commented Poland's deputy minister of foreign affairs, Konrad Szymański. (nh/pk)
