Waszczykowski was on Wednesday due to hold talks with Jordanian Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour and with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.

Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Arthur Dmochowski said that Waszczykowski’s visit is mainly linked to charity initiatives.

"We will be bringing items including Christmas gifts for children from a refugee camp,” Dmochowski said. "Some of the highlights of the visit will be the inauguration of two projects financed by Polish development funds: a playground at a school in Ramtha and a medical facility in Mafraq.”

Dmochowski said that as part of efforts to help refugees in Jordan, the Polish embassy in Amman has in recent years completed 17 projects worth 232,000 euros.

After the 13 November terror attacks in Paris, Waszczykowski ruled out major military involvement by Poland in an anti-terrorist coalition but said Warsaw could offer “humanitarian” help.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN refugee agency, Jordan has taken in more than 600,000 immigrants from Syria, but the Jordanian authorities believe that the real number of refugees is twice as high. (pk)
