Number of asylum seekers to Poland increasing

The number of asylum seekers in Poland has increased significantly over the last year, according to the Office for Foreigners.

The figure amounted to 11,000 in 2015, up from 8,000 in 2014.

As many as 346 of these were from Syria between January and mid-December of 2015, compared with the 262 from that country who applied for asylum the previous year.

The previous Polish government led by the Civic Platform party had agreed to take on some 8,000 immigrants as part of an EU relocation programme.

The current Polish government has announced that it will reconsider the numbers. (rg)
