Russia has handed over another 14 volumes of documents concerning the investigation into the plane crash in Smolensk, days before the one-year anniversary of the tragedy.

The transfer of the documents this morning comes in response to an appeal by Poland’s Attorney General for more legal assistance on the investigation into the disaster from Russian counterparts.

Poland is still to receive a full record of the autopsies of the 96 victims as well as documentation of the airport in Smolensk.

The Russian investigation files into the 10 April air crash amount to over 183 volumes, 36 of which are marked ‘classified’, 80 defined as for ‘official use only’ and 67 as ‘open documents’.

Poland has so far received 67 open documents and 70 documents for official use.

It is being speculated that soon Poland may also expect documents from the Russian Military Prosecution concerning the murder of 22,000 Polish officers by Stalin’s NKVD secret police in 1940. (ab/pg)
