Poland voices ‘deep concern’ at North Korea nuclear test

Poland has voiced “deep concern” after North Korea said it has successfully tested a hydrogen nuclear bomb.

“It is with deep concern that we have received information about the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s thermonuclear test,” the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement on its website.
“If confirmed, it will mean yet another violation by Pyongyang of its international obligations, and the provisions of the UN Security Council’s resolution.”
The Polish foreign ministry added: “Such actions pose a threat to the security and stability in the region, as well as the international system of non-proliferation and arms control.
“We call on the DPRK to stop [such actions], and constructively engage in dialogue with the international community, especially in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the six-party talks.”
The ministry added that Poland has been involved in the stabilization process on the Korean Peninsula since 1953 by participating in the Neutral Nations’ Supervisory Commission.
“We stand ready to support efforts for reconciliation of the Korean people, and for building lasting security and stability in the region,” the ministry added.
Despite doubts voiced by experts that the device North Korea tested on Wednesday was a hydrogen bomb, the trial has caused international concern. (pk)
