The demonstrators voiced support for Poland’s new Law and Justice (PiS) government, which has faced a barrage of criticism over controversial changes it has introduced to the media and judiciary. PiS has denied undermining democracy in Poland.

One of the banners wielded by the protestors in New York read: “European Union, Hands Off Poland.”

Last week, the European Commission announced a probe into whether controversial laws pushed through by PiS violate EU standards. Meanwhile, a debate about Poland is to be held at the European Parliament on Tuesday.

The head of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, who hails from Germany, recently said that the Polish government is practicing “Putin-style” politics.

Seventy-five percent of Poles living in America who voted in Poland’s October parliamentary elections backed PiS. (pk)
