Poland may introduce temporary border controls as it hosts a NATO summit and World Youth Day in July, Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said on Friday.

Waszczykowski said Poland is facing "a dilemma, because in July we will be hosting the NATO summit, and then the Holy Father [Pope Francis] who will arrive for World Youth Day.

"We do not exclude introducing border controls – for several days or slightly longer – for security reasons,” Waszczykowski said, adding that did not mean Poland would be abandoning the principles of the European Union's passport-free Schengen zone.

The upcoming NATO summit is to take place 8-9 July at the National Stadium in Warsaw, bringing together some 2,500 delegates, including heads of state and government, EU and United Nations leaders.

World Youth Day officially lasts from 25 July to 31 July, and some 2,000 groups of pilgrims from 138 countries - a total of almost 450,000 people - have already confirmed they will take part in the event. (pk)
