Poland is set to take in some 100 asylum seekers in the weeks ahead, around 65 of whom will be relocated from Greece and up to 35 from Italy, the PAP news agency has reported.

The asylum seekers, who are likely to arrive in March, will be the first group taken in by Poland as part of the country’s pledge to the EU to take in 7,000 refugees over two years.

The head of Poland’s Office for Foreigners, Rafał Rogala, told the PAP agency the refugees arriving from Greece would mostly be families from Syria, Iraq, Eritrea and Yemen.

In the case of Italy, the refugees would mostly be single men from Eritrea, he added.

"Checks on these individuals are underway, including security checks, as are consultations with Greece and Italy,” Rogala said.

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło has announced that no more than 400 refugees will be relocated to this country in 2016.

Only four percent of Poles believe their country should take in refugees and allow them to settle here, according to a recent survey. (pk)
