The figure includes EUR 3 million vouched during Thursday’s Supporting Syria and the Region conference of European leaders in London.

“I decided to provide additional funds amounting to EUR 3 million to support the EU-MADAD fund. In total, through the UN, European Union instruments and bilateral channels in 2016, Poland intends to allocate EUR 4.5 million to support the victims of the Syrian crisis,” Szydło told a press conference.

Meanwhile the Czech Republic has vouched EUR 6.3 million, with Hungary and Slovakia earmarking EUR 5 million and EUR 4.7 million respectively.

“If ever there was a moment to take a new approach to the humanitarian crisis in Syria – surely it is now,” tweeted British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The funds will help structural investments to ensure jobs for refugees as well as provide them with educational opportunities.

Britain and the four other co-hosts of the international donors conference - Germany, Norway, Kuwait and the United Nations - hope participants will pledge about USD 9 billion to help 13.5 million people in Syria and 4.4 million refugees in neighbouring states. (rg/pk)
