The visit will be part of efforts to build a common front by the Visegrad Group – which groups Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia – ahead of an upcoming EU summit, Polish public broadcaster TVP reported.

Government spokesman Rafał Bochenek said: “We want to talk to Prime Minister Orban about European issues, about current issues, including immigration.”

While in Budapest, Szydło is also expected to discuss Britain's plans to curb benefits for migrants.

Another priority for Warsaw is making NATO more visible on the military alliance’s eastern flank.

The Czech minister for European affairs, Tomas Prouza, has told Poland’s PAP news agency that Prague will support Warsaw in its efforts to secure a permanent NATO military presence in Poland.

A meeting of the Visegrad Group is scheduled for 15 February, with an EU summit to be held three days later.

Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said that cooperation with Visegrad Group countries will be a priority for Poland’s Law and Justice (PiS) government, formed after the party won general elections in October. (pk)
