The arson attack took place in May 2015, 38 km west of Berlin in the town of Nauen, where suspect Maik Schneider is a councillor.

A 22-year-old woman has also been arrested in connection with the incident, and a third party is being sought by police.

The arrest comes as Germany's highest court, the Constitutional Court, considers an outright ban on the NPD.

The far-right party, which has one seat in the European Parliament but none in the Bundestag, has been accused of hate speech against Jews and Muslims.

However, critics of the proposed ban argue that prohibition could backfire, potentially turning party leaders into martyrs. (nh/pk)
