The demonstrators on Wednesday waved Polish, Ukrainian and Russian flags, and the EU flag. They brandished banners saying "Hands off Ukraine" and "Free Nadia," and chanted "Down with Russian imperialism!"

Savchenko is being held over the death of two Russian journalists during separatist fighting in eastern Ukraine. She could face over 20 years in jail if found guilty and has started a hunger strike in protest at what she has claimed is a show trial. The verdict is due on March 21.

Earlier on Wednesday Polish MPs passed a resolution that read: "The Sejm [lower house] of the Republic of Poland, together with the international community, strongly demands the immediate release by Russia of Nadia Savchenko, an illegally imprisoned citizen of Ukraine.”

While the resolution was being read out in parliament, some MPs stood up holding placards with the Ukrainian pilot’s picture and a caption that said: "Solidarity with Nadia Savchenko." (pk)
