Speaking after a meeting of parliament’s committee for special services, Macierewicz said security forces should be given new equipment ahead of the two international events, during which Poland will be at the center of world attention.

He added that security could be planned in such a way “that residents do not feel any inconvenience" because of the NATO summit in Warsaw.

The military alliance’s summit is to take place 8-9 July at the National Stadium in the Polish capital, bringing together some 2,500 delegates, including heads of state and government, EU and United Nations leaders.

Macierewicz said that various Polish security services would have a joint command during the NATO meeting and World Youth Days.

The Roman Catholic Church’s World Youth Days takes place from 25 July to 31 July, with millions of pilgrims expected to flock to Poland. Pope Francis is to attend the event.

Interior Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said earlier this month that Poland will deploy an extra 13,000 police, border guards and other officers for the two international events. (pk)
