That would be a record number of pilgrims from the United States for a meeting with the pope outside North America.

Paul Jarzembowski, who coordinates World Youth Days initiatives by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, told Polish Radio: “There will be a couple of groups that will be very small, maybe one or two people, and there will be groups of several hundred from different dioceses.

“Parishes are bringing in quite a number. Others are going with national movements.”

Some of the pilgrims from the United States have Polish roots. But for most the trip will be their first time in Poland.

World Youth Days takes place from 25 to 31 July, with millions of pilgrims expected to flock to Poland. Pope Francis is to attend the event. (pk)
