The Al-Jazeera television network has broadcast sensational claims this morning that Colonel Gaddafi's wife and daughter have flown to Poland to seek safe haven.

Poland's Foreign Ministry has refused to comment on the claim.

Safia Gaddafi and daughter Aisha are included on a UN sanctions list however and are therefore not allowed to enter most nations.

A diplomatic source has told thenews.pl, however, that the claim is “highly unlikely”.

The seemingly bizarre claim comes in the wake of an official denial by the Tunisian government, Wednesday, that the wife and daughter of the dictator were in Tunisia, although it was unclear whether they were on a diplomatic mission or seeking safe haven.

A security source told the Reuters news agency that the two women, together with a Libyan delegation arrived on the Tunisian island of Djerba near the Libyan border 14 May.

However, Arabic television stations quoted Tunisian officials as denying that the family members were in the country.

Although Warsaw did not send military forces to Libya, Poland has supported the Allied initiative in the country. Politicians from all parties have criticised the excesses of Gaddafi regime.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski flew to meet Libyan insurgents earlier this month in a surprise visit. (nh/pg)
