The family had been on a waiting list to be granted council accommodation for six years, but despite having only just moved in, they have already returned the keys to the council in Mayfield, northern Cork.

We can't move here, our safety is more important,” a member of the family told Ireland Live News.

A group of people aged between about 15 and 30 apparently congregated outside the house on Monday night, hurling glass bottles at the windows, and reportedly trying to set the property on fire.

The Polish parents were then allegedly physically assaulted when they tried to leave the house.

Neighbours intervened and dragged the couple to safety.

One member of the alleged attackers has already been arrested by guardai (Irish police) and an investigation is ongoing. (nh/pk)
