At a meeting with military officials held on Friday, Putin said that “we are forced to think about neutralizing developing threats to Russia’s security, related to the deployment of the missile shield in Europe”.

Russia is yet making every effort to preserve the strategic balance of power, so that a large-scale conflict is avoided, the Russian President stressed.

Poland started building a missile-shield base on Friday, a day after Romania launched its missile defence site.

“These are not defence systems, it is part of the strategic nuclear potential of the United States moved to our periphery; in this case, the periphery is Eastern Europe,” Putin added.

Poland has been pressing for stronger NATO’s presence in the region in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Crimea. (ał/rg)
