Some 15,300 people have perished to date since a tsunami swept through parts of the country on 11 March with over 125,000 buildings have been destroyed.

An auction will take place in Warsaw this Wednesday, due to the initiative of the Main Board of the Association of Polish Architects (SARP), together with Krzysztof Ingarden, architect and honorary Japanese consul in Krakow, and Dr Marta Urbanska.

The event, which is open to the public, will be held at the Zamoyski Palace, the headquarters of SARP.

Poland's leading auction house, DESA, has charitably agreed to conduct the sales, which comprise of sketches and paintings donated by Polish architects and movie-maker Wajda, the founder of the Manggha Museum of Japanese Culture in Krakow.

The Japanese Ambassador will be amongst the guests of honour, and proceeds will be transferred directly to the embassy in Warsaw. (nh/pg)
