The US fund, which invests in media companies in countries facing free speech threats, has bought 11 percent of shares of the publisher, which owns the Gazeta Wyborcza daily. The newspaper is a staunch critic of the ruling conservative Law and Justice government.

“Can the financier and speculator save the Third Republic [established after the fall of communism in 1989]?” asks conservative daily Gazeta Polska Codziennie.

George Soros was one of the key driving forces behind Poland’s economic reform plan shifting the country from communism to a free-market economy in the late 1980s, the daily points out.

He is the founder of the Stefan Batory Foundation, whose standard activity includes promoting multiculturalism, and which supports the acceptance of asylum seekers fleeing poverty and war zones in North Africa and the Middle East.

George Soros is on a long list of world leaders, business people and celebrities disclosed in the so-called Panama Papers affair exposing numerous offshore accounts set up to conceal assets and avoid taxation. The scandal has put the spotlight on high-profile figures the likes of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, alongside Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and former president Ronald Reagan.

Conservative daily Gazeta Polska Codziennie has noted that Balcerowicz's NGO the Civil Development Forum (FOR) has been sponsored by two offshore companies in the Caribbean, and they are listed as donors on FOR's website.
