Russian security services have been systematically intimidating American diplomats in Moscow and several European capitals, according to The Washington Post.

The paper said the “campaign of harassment” has prompted US Secretary of State John Kerry to ask Russian President Vladimir Putin to intervene.

US diplomats have complained that intruders have broken into their homes late at night, that they have had their tyres slashed and their children followed to school, the Post said in an article penned by Josh Rogin.

The paper quoted Norm Eisen, US ambassador the Czech Republic from 2011 to 2014, as saying the recent intimidation was “in retaliation for Western sanctions because of Ukraine... They are hitting American diplomats literally where they live.”
