The EU will not succeed if it does not create a genuine Union of confidence, the prime ministers of Visegrad Group countries said in a declaration adopted on Tuesday.

The heads of government of Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia met ahead of an EU summit in Brussels to discuss the results of a UK referendum to leave the EU, and the future of the bloc following the British decision.

"Trust between member states must be strengthened, starting with overcoming artificial and unnecessary divisions, which we have observed an increase of in recent months,” the declaration by the Visegrad Group (V4) said.

Warsaw, Prague, Bratislava and Budapest argue that the EU must listen to the voices of national parliaments and the bloc should focus on subjects that unite, rather than divide it. (rg)
