A meeting of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) will be held on July 13, with the aim to discuss air safety measures over the Baltic Sea, among other issues, the Russian Defence Ministry has said in a statement.

The talks are scheduled to begin just few days after an upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw (8-9 July), the Russian RIA news agency reported on Saturday.

Moscow "is working to include the issue of air safety measures over the Baltic Sea on the meeting's agenda," reads the statement by Russia’s Defence Ministry.

There have been a number of controversial manoeuvres by Russian fighter jets over the Baltic Sea in recent months.

The last meeting of the NATO-Russia Council was held in 2014, but all practical cooperation between the western military alliance and Moscow was suspended following Russia’s annexation of Crimea that year.

On April 15 NATO issued a statement saying that "NRC members agree to convene a meeting."

Russian President Valdimir Putin also spoke about "preventing conflicts in Baltic airspace" during a meeting with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto in Naantali, south-western Finland, on Friday. (ał)
