Krzysztof Szczerski said: "For the president it was and is important for a signal to go out from Warsaw about the unity of NATO.

“This is particularly important today, in the face of the divisions that have been revealed after the referendum in the UK" in which Britons voted to leave the EU.

At the 8-9 July summit in Warsaw, leaders of NATO countries are expected to announce details of plans to station four multinational battalions on a rotating basis in Poland and the Baltic states, which all fear potential Russian aggression after Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The summit, which begins on Friday afternoon, will be attended by 18 presidents, 21 prime ministers, 41 foreign ministers and 39 defence ministers. (pk)
