NATO focusing on ‘non-existent’ threat, says Russia

NATO is focusing its efforts on warding off "a non-existent” threat from the East, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday, in its first reaction to the July 8-9 NATO summit in Warsaw.

"Contrary to the objective interests of maintaining peace and stability in Europe and the need to bring together the potential of all responsible international players in counteracting real, not imaginary, challenges, the Alliance is focusing its efforts on ‘deterring’ a non-existent ‘threat from the East’," said a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website.
The ministry added that during a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council planned for July 13, Moscow expects "detailed explanations” from the Western military alliance.
NATO country leaders meeting in Warsaw on Friday and Saturday decided to deploy four multinational, rotating battalions to Poland and three Baltic countries, which all fear potential Russian aggression after Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.
