“I would like the situation in Turkey to go back to normal as soon as possible,“ said Duda on Saturday morning after Friday‘s attempted power takeover by military chiefs in the country.

Over 160 people were killed in clashes that broke out across Turkey after a faction of the army sought to seize power, reports news agency Reuters. Over 1,500 pro-coup military personnel have since been detained by Turkish authorities.

“It is most likely that the democratically elected authorities have contained the situation and this coup attempt proved unsuccessful,“ Duda told journalists. “This means that democracy has triumphed,“ he added.

Stability in the country “is important for the security and peace in this part of the world,“ Duda told journalists at the French Embassy in Warsaw, where he paid tribute to the victims of Thursday’s terrorist attack in Nice.

“We need to remember that Turkey plays a significant role in countering the migration crisis,“ the president said, adding that the country also played an important part in “securing stability in this part of the world, as it undertakes efforts to contain the ongoing war in Syria.“
