“Turkey’s return to normalcy after last week’s coup attempt should proceed in line with world standards,” Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said in Brussels on Monday.

Talking to journalists during a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Waszczykowski added: “Most of us still do not have full knowledge of what actually happened in Turkey”.

Referring to the arrest of some 3,000 judges and 36 generals, as well as to the Turkish president’s call to re-introduce the death penalty, Waszczykowski said: “Frans Timmermans [first vice-president of the European Commission] should react. The Venice Commission can react as well. The EU has at its disposal all the instruments that have been used in relation to us [Poland].

“If the EU wants to continue talks with Turkey on its membership of the bloc, it has the instruments to react. It’ll be interesting to see if these instruments are used.”

Timmermans was instrumental in the Commission’s decision to launch a so-called rule of law procedure against Poland in a bid to explain doubts connected with a reform of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal. (mk/pk)
