Polish academic appointed deputy head of AIIB

Polish sociologist and expert on China Radosław Pyffel has been appointed as deputy director of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Poland’s infrastructure ministry has said.

The cofounder and chief of the Centre for Polish-Asian Studies (CSPA) is to become a member of the bank’s board of directors, the ministry announced.
Pyffel was approved by a constituency of members of Europe, which, alongside Poland, include countries such as Switzerland, Britain and Norway.
Poland is the sole CEE country to become a founding member of the China-led multilateral financial institution.
“The constituency is formally represented in the board of directors by a director and two deputies,” the ministry said.
“The posts are appointed on a rotational basis, in line with a scheme set out for the years 2016-2034,” the ministry added.
Poland joined the ranks of the international bank in mid-June. As is the case with other founding countries, the Polish finance minister has taken on the role of governor representing Poland.
The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is a Chinese alternative to US-dominated international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The AIIB is to serve as a driver of investment in infrastructure and economic growth in China. (aba)
