Russia could break off diplomatic relations with Ukraine, but a war is unlikely, say Russian media outlets, commenting on new tensions between Moscow and Kiev over the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

"Moscow is examining such an option. The final word in this matter, however, is that of the Russian president," writes Russian daily Izvestia.

On the other hand, the Moskovskij Komsomolets daily writes that Russia may introduce new economic sanctions against Ukraine.

More police officers will likely also turn up on the Crimean peninsula, the paper reports.

NATO leaders at the July summit in Warsaw declared they “do not – and will not – recognise Russia’s illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea” in 2014. (rg)
