A reported sighting of Farage standing in line at the German embassy in London sparked speculation that the former head of the UK Independence Party, an outspoken anti-EU campaigner, could be applying for dual citizenship.

Facebook user Leonie Witte said on her page that she had seen Farage “in the queue at the German embassy with me and my fellow European citizens”, adding: “I guess he realised he really kinda screwed us over and is quickly trying to also get some dual citizenship.”

Britain’s express.co.uk news website quoted a Ukip source as saying that Farage, whose wife is German, “was at the embassy in relation to a personal matter. The idea that it's anything to do with German citizenship is complete rubbish."

According to some reports, British citizens have been rushing to secure EU passports since the country’s Brexit vote.

In a referendum held on 23 June, 51.9 percent of UK citizens voted to leave the EU while 48.1 percent voted to stay, a result that dealt a blow to the European Union and caused turmoil on global markets.
