Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski told reporters in New York: "The vote in June is secret and [the result] is never absolutely certain.

“Even if we get support in writing, through a diplomatic note, usually about 20 percent of support declared in such notes does not materialize," he added.

A Polish delegation has been lobbying for backing at a session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Poland is trying to secure the support of around 130 countries. Polish President Andrzej Duda and Waszczykowski have so far met officials from about 20 of them.

The UN Security Council consists of five veto-wielding permanent members (China, France, Russia, the UK and US), and 10 non-permanent members elected by the organisation’s General Assembly for a term of two years.

One non-permanent place goes to a country from Eastern Europe. From the latter group, Bulgaria has put itself forward as a candidate as well as Poland. (pk)
