Peres, a respected statesman who jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 and who was a campaigner for peace in the Middle East, was taken to hospital on September 13 after suffering a stroke.

Peres was born Szymon Perski in 1923 in Wiszniew, Poland (now Vishnyeva, Belarus). His father emigrated to British Palestine in 1932, and the family followed him several years later.

Polish President Andrzej Duda’s office tweeted: “Shimon Peres, the former president and prime minister of Israel, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, has died. Respect to his memory.”
