Washington Post columnist Anne Applebaum has been accused of Kremlin-style “disinformation” by commentator Matthew Tyrmand.

In a piece for the breitbart.com website, Tyrmand accused Applebaum of using her global media contacts to construct a news narrative depicting Poland’s conservative Law and Justice government “as far right fascists and illiberal anti-democrats.”

Tyrmand’s piece follows a Washington Post op-ed by Applebaum last week in which she delved into official investigations into the Polish presidential plane crash in Smolensk, western Russia, in 2010.

That article raised hackles in some quarters in Poland and was slammed by a conservative Polish commentator as "a load of nonsense".

Tyrmand lashed out at “a barrage of negative hyperbole aimed at the new Polish government by friends, acquaintances, colleagues, and fellow travelers of Applebaum” and her husband Radosław Sikorski, the foreign minister under Poland’s previous Civic Platform-led government.

Tyrmand claimed that days after the April 2010 crash of a Polish plane which killed 96 people on board, including President Lech Kaczyński, Applebaum “engaged in a highly coercive form of political journalism much akin to the Russian disinformation stratagem she often excoriates.”

He added: “She gave cover to the many irregularities in the post-tragedy investigation that grossly lacked transparency.

“This was most likely in an attempt to help influence the coming snap presidential election from which her husband’s party would look to capitalize with their candidate Bronisław Komorowski.”
