Europe is facing huge challenges: terrorism, globalisation, migration and the economic crisis, the vice President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans said in Poland on Thursday.

Timmermans was speaking in Sopot, northern Poland, during the opening gala of the 6th European Forum for New Ideas (EFNI).

“We also have an unemployment and a banking crisis. This is a whole range of different problems that violate our security. The most important thing for Europe and even the world as a whole, is how we deal with the fourth industrial revolution. And we should not make mistakes here,” Timmermans said.

He also emphasised the importance of maintaining the Schengen zone – an agreement of 26 EU countries which allow free movement of people across the bloc.

“We, as the European Union, need to better protect our external borders. We will introduce European Union border guards. The Schengen zone is not only good for tourism, but also a guarantee of a single market,” Timmermans argued. (rg)
