Macierewicz was set to be a headline speaker at the opening of the 8th annual CEPA [Center for European Policy Analysis] Forum in Washington, DC on Wednesday.

However he did not make it to the forum in person, saying he had to attend a government meeting in Warsaw.

He was represented on the first day of the conference – entitled “Saving the West – Priorities and Principles” – by a ministry aide, who read out a letter he had written.

Macierewicz wrote that he did not rule out that Russia supports Islamic terrorists.

He described the clash of the pro-Western aspirations of Ukraine with the "brutal" intervention of Russia as a “clash of civilisations".

“If you look at what happened on Maidan in 2013 and what is happening now in Ukraine being attacked by Russia [it points to] a civilisation clash. The Western aspirations of the Ukrainian people were confronted with brutal force and eastern dictatorship. If we are seeing social turmoil in Western Europe associated with the wave of terrorism and the migration crisis - this is also a civilisation clash,” the letter read.

Macierewicz wrote that “we should ask ourselves another question: Is it possible that Russia is currently, or could even [in future] create radical Islamic terrorism and Jihadism? The answer to this question may be fundamental for the survival of our civilization.” (rg)
