Peres, who died in hospital on Wednesday, two weeks after suffering a stroke, was born Szymon Perski in the Polish village of Wiszniew, now in Belarus.

He was one of the most influential figures in Israeli politics for decades, serving as president (2007-2014), prime minister, as well as member of the cabinet and parliament.

In a telegram earlier this week, President Duda wrote: “On behalf of the Polish people and on my own behalf, I wish to convey to you our profound condolences and expressions of regret in the face of the loss of this illustrious statesman, one of the most respected and renowned politicians in Israel and world-wide.

“We also remember his meritorious services in the process of building a positive climate in mutual relations between Poland and Israel, and his efforts to promote understanding and cooperation. This endeavour was underpinned by our shared destinies and most glorious […] traditions of Polish and Jewish coexistence, and also by our shared drama suffered under the Nazi occupation. He emphasised the need to foster friendship between our countries and nations, bearing also in mind future generations. May this message live on, never losing its validity,” Duda wrote.

“I trust that the political roadmap charted out by Shimon Peres will be continued by his successors, to the benefit of the Jewish state, its inhabitants and its neighbours.” (rg)
