Seventeen journalists lost their jobs after the Ukrainian service was shut down, according to euractiv. It added that the Euronews Russian service is financed by Moscow.

The Russian service has five job openings, but has refused to take on any of the 17 journalists from the Ukrainian section, euractiv reported.

According to the website, managers said that in not hiring any Ukrainian journalists they were acting on the instructions of the Russian shareholder, Russian state TV.

The journalists have argued that this stance violates French labour laws.

But managers have argued that Ukrainian journalists are not suitable for the Russian service “because their cultural background is too different,” according to euractiv.

The website added that journalists have rejected that explanation.

Euronews is a group of multilingual news media based in Lyon, France.
