Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski met his Belarusian counterpart Vladimir Makei in Warsaw on the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration on Good-Neighbourliness, Mutual Recognition and Cooperation between Poland and Belarus.

“Our ties are closer now [and] I hope that we will continue this way,” Waszczykowski said after the meeting.

Minister Waszczykowski stressed that although mutual co-operation during the last 25 years was plagued with some difficulties, the societies of Poland and Belarus were always open to one another.

“We nurtured historical tradition; we have done so in the past and will continue to do so. I bring good news today – we have made a small but important step towards explaining certain historical events. Minister Makei brought with him some information found in Belarusian archives, regarding the fate of many Poles,” Waszczykowski said.

He said that the information would be passed on to the appropriate Polish institutions on Monday, in order for them to study it. “It is possible that you will receive previously unknown information about these important relations,” the minister added. (rg)
