British police are searching for a man suspected of attacking a Polish woman on a late-night London Underground train.

The man started an argument with the woman, during which he made reference to the fact she was Polish.

“When the train stopped at Hammersmith, the man then punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground,” British Transport Police said on their website.

The woman was attacked on 22 September.

According to media reports, the UK has seen a spike in racially aggravated crimes following the country's Brexit referendum decision to leave the EU.

In August, three Polish men were attacked by a group of teenagers in Harlow, southeast England. One of them died from his injuries. (ał/pk)
