Nord Stream II is off the table: Polish FM

“There will be no Nord Stream II,” Waszczykowski said, adding that construction of the project has not officially been called off.

The European Commission in October allowed increased gas flow through OPAL, a pipeline which runs along Germany’s eastern border to the Czech Republic. OPAL is part of Nord Stream I, which bypasses Poland and the Baltic States.

“Unofficially we know that the flow [of gas] through OPAL – and therefore through Nord Stream I – will be increased, and that may satisfy Gazprom enough to give up construction of Nord Stream II,” Waszczykowski said.

Poland has said it will contest the European Commission’s October decision to lift a cap on OPAL.

“OPAL competes with liquefied natural gas which we buy through our new LNG terminal and with the planned Norwegian gas pipeline, which we wanted [to use] to supply gas to southern Europe,” Waszczykowski said. (vb/pk)
