Polish FM: Sanctions against Russia should be extended by a year

The European Union’s economic sanctions against Russia should be extended by a year, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said.

He said that Russia “is not fulfilling peace agreements” and “is engaging in further armed conflicts.”

The EU imposed sanctions on Russia over its annexation of Crimea in March 2014.

The sanctions expire at the end of January and have previously been extended by six months at a time.

EU leaders are expected to take a decision on the matter at a summit in Brussels on Thursday.

“I cannot imagine democratic governments and democratically elected presidents... not noticing breaches of international law… and going back to business as usual with Russia,” Waszczykowski said.
